Multi-Tenant Seat Allocation & Distributed Booking Engine

How an atomic distributed seat-reservation lock with a 5-minute TTL eliminated double-booking errors from 4.8% to 0.0% during concurrency spikes while serving 300+ simultaneous travel agencies under 65ms P95 latency.

The Engineering Bottleneck

High-Concurrency Race Conditions on Limited Inventory

In high-demand flight booking routes, multiple travel agencies and their registered sub-agents concurrently access a shared pool of limited seats. Without strict transactional serialization, simultaneous checkout requests caused classic race conditions:

  • Seat Collision & Double-Booking: Two sub-agents submitting confirmation within a 50ms window both received success acknowledgments for the exact same physical flight seat (4.8% incident rate).
  • Read Bottlenecks: Unindexed flight availability queries took 380ms+ during peak traffic, degrading agent checkout conversion.
  • Cross-Tenant Exposure: Competing agencies sharing a monolithic database risked viewing each other's negotiated fare tiers and passenger manifests.
The Solution

Atomic Distributed Locking Grounded in Kleppmann's Principles

Grounding the design in Martin Kleppmann's distributed synchronization boundaries (*Designing Data-Intensive Applications*), I architected a 5-stage transactional pipeline that decouples reservation holds from ticket issuance:

STAGE 01

Agency Authentication & Scope Scoping

Cryptographic RS256 JWT validation enforces agency namespace boundaries at the API gateway before requests reach the data layer, ensuring 100% cryptographic tenant isolation.

STAGE 02

Compound-Indexed Aggregation Pipeline (<35ms)

Real-time seat availability and quota balances are calculated dynamically via compound-indexed MongoDB aggregation pipelines, bypassing full document scans and reducing read query latency by 83.8%.

STAGE 03

Atomic Distributed Seat Lock (5-Minute TTL)

When a seat is selected, an atomic reservation lock with a 5-minute Time-To-Live (TTL) is acquired. If the booking is not completed within 5 minutes, the lock automatically expires and the seat is returned to the public pool without human intervention.

STAGE 04

Quota Reconciliation Gate

Transactional agency deposit balances are reconciled inside a single atomic boundary, preventing negative balance overdrafts across high-frequency agent requests.

STAGE 05

State Commit & Asynchronous Manifest Issuance

Final state commit confirms ticket issuance, invalidates the temporary lock, and triggers background BullMQ workers to generate passenger manifests and billing receipts.
